Presidents Report 18th April 2022
Well what a great Easter weekend, I hope you enjoyed a few Easter Eggs & Hot Cross buns. I certainly did😊
This Tuesday we have 3 pupils from MAC competing in our annual speech contest. Should be a great night. And then the following weekend there is the tree planting and social get together at Bannock Burn to celebrate District 9980.

Also I’m sure PE/PP Mike E is looking for helpers again to pick grapes. Might be a nice way to work off all the easter Eggs & Hot Cross Buns.
Stay safe and have a great week.

Cheers Rich

Guest Speaker Tuesday 5th April:  Matai Wells

We had the pleasure of listening to Matai who is in his last year at MAC and received a FMC Youth Scholarship.

He had a mentor helping him out which was his Dad and he was inspired from a photograph on his wall at home of his great, great uncle & alpine journals to walk the Glacier Dome and see the Volta glacier in one trip. They trekked in from the sea and headed towards the glacier which was a big adventure.

Matai learnt a lot from the trip and really enjoyed the scenery but was surprised by how much the glacier had receded over the years. He had photos from his great grandfather to compare which was really interesting seeing how much the glacier had changed over the years. Impressive scenery and a very memorable trip. From this trip he is going to look into being a surveyor, an alpine trekking guide or do something in joinery.

We wish him the best of luck with his next adventures.

Thanks to Hannah Walker for the review of Matai's talk

Rotary Fundraiser: Grape Picking.

It rained yesterday – but this morning was cool and clear, ending up with a really nice comfortable 16 degrees – which was just as well really, as we had work to do!!
Grape picking – Hmm??

We had lost various events this year – duck race, Warbirds, Gibbston Valley, etc, so we wanted to get into something that would fill our coffers a little. After some discussion with Ian and Fiona from Aitken’s Folly winery, we arranged to provide some Rotarians to pick grapes, due in large part to the shortage of seasonal workers in the area, and because it filled a need for some fundraising for the Rotary Club of Wanaka.

So, volunteers were sought and then organised to be at the vineyard at 8.15am on 13th April for the Health and Safety briefing – and instruction of the fine art of picking grapes. Suitably armed with gloves and snips, off we set and were shown the lines of grapes to be picked – Chardonnay by the way! – and the buckets were waiting for our efforts.
What a great time we had! The grapes flew off the vines, the chat was loud and strong, the snips – well, snipped actually!! It was amazing to see how quickly we were able to fill a 20 litre bucket, which was then emptied into the bin on the trailer to be taken away to the winery (Maude in this case). Up and down the rows we went, with some areas heavier in grapes than others – all to do with the geology, don’t you know??

All of a sudden it was smoko time, so back to the house for tea, coffee, cakes, buns, seat, and more chat! Righto chaps, Up and at them again – so back to the vines and more buckets of grapes, chat, walking, leg-pulling, but no throwing of grapes, luckily!! An occasional break as we waited for the tractor to come and empty the buckets before we were back into it with gusto. Then, just as suddenly, it was lunch time, so back to the house, and, looking back to the vines, only five rows to go before we were to be finished in the afternoon.

Lunch sitting outside with lots of food, and then a certain ex GP, who shall remain nameless, insisted that the lady beside him needed a glass of Chardonnay to see what the grapes were all about. Well, this was all that was needed for everyone to have a (small, honestly) glass of wine!

Suitably sated, some of our numbers had to depart before the rest of us carried on with the grape picking, and then, just like that, we were finished!!!

I would like to thank all those who took part in the day – for whatever length of time. It was a great effort and we had a lot of fun and enjoyment – certainly the most enjoyable and interesting I have had for some time – and we picked about 3 tonnes of grapes for the day.

There were 18 Rotarians and one guest of a Rotarian – absolutely brilliant! I have yet to tally the hours, but it will be a great return on our time.

But wait!! There is more!! We are wanted for the other grapes along the Mount Aspiring Road, starting on Tueday 19th and probably going on to Wednesday the 20th, so for those who would like to come and take part, please get back to me as soon as possible.
Thank you everyone for an amazing day - and not forgetting Ian and Fiona for allowing us to be a part of their 2022 vintage.

Thanks to Past President and soon to be President Mike for this report.

  1. Polio Movie Event: tomorrow, 12th April - The Duke.  Di Cusens co-ordinated ticket sales.

  1. Quiz Night
No intention of running a quiz night this year. Reasons: COVID caution, not a good time to ask for donations from businesses as ‘Crop Competition’ is also asking for sponsorship.

  1. General – raised by committee members
- Communication generally, want more information on who we are giving grants to, and the rationale.
- What fundraising/events are coming up and finding out about them.
- The committee would like to see the Rotary meetings jazzed up a bit - made more interesting. For example: Do we need a speaker every week? There was a strong interest in bringing back the Sergeant, 3-Minute talks, having Rotary banners, and Rotary wheel and more time to socialise, going through to the room earlier, having less meetings, so just 2 a month etc. Are the meetings just a bit too casual?
Pres. Richard noted strong lobbying, for and against, in the past re most of these suggestions.Directors agreed to leave things as they are for now, although earlier movement to ‘the room’ could be attempted.
- Directors agreed to a Forum in the near future and noted the various comments were viewed as helpful.

Fundraising: Geoffrey Tomkins

  1. Winter Feed Competition
George Scott returns from Tasmania on 7th April, and a meeting with the fund raising committee will be organised to commence detailed event planning. The recent change in Covid rules may work to our advantage.

  1. Gibbston Valley Concert 2023
Directors noted that John Huddleston has written to the organisers to confirm we are interested in staffing this in 2023, and that the club would get back to them (outgoing mail this month).

Directors agreed that the RCW cannot easily provide 47 volunteers for this event, plus additional Rotarians for a gold coin car park collection. The involvement of the Aspiring Rotary Club will be sought.

Noted that this year (prior to event cancellation) that Aspiring Rotary were to help staff the ticketing as in previous years, and the clubs had agreed that the Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust being given the fee earned, and possibly a D9980 Matching Grant “top up” as a joint club initiative.

Directors gave approval to John Huddleston formally accepting and signing the Concert organisers contract.

  2. Larraine Shepherd Memorial Function: Monday 18 April at The Hub.  Fran Tate assisting with organisation. Have 9 Rotary volunteers to help with food preparation and service.  Late news – they may not be needed!

  1. Ruby Island Sign: New sign completed. Paid for by Wanaka Storage Solutions and includes RCW logo.  Ruby Island Management Committee very happy.

  1. RYDA (youth driver training): 10 August at Highland Park involving MAC students. Have been asked to provide volunteers to assist again, which we will do.

  1. Application from Blake Cotton -Everitt (12): Made on his behalf by his mother for funding assistance to attend hip hop dance competitions in Invercargill and Wellington. Total cost $1000 and seeking $500 from Rotary. Has received $100 from the Wanaka Arts Group. SP Committee was impressed by the application and recommends a grant of $500.  Directors noted and agreed with the recommendation.

  1. Holy Family School: For $1900 (being $50 for each of the 38 group members) towards the total cost of $23,044 for a Year 7 & 8 Camp to Wellington in May. The SP Committee noted this was not a "camp" as such, but a visit to Wellington to see things such as Te Papa , Parliament Buildings and Wellington Zoo.  Directors noted the Committee recommended the application be declined, however agreed to grant $1000, from Club funds, on the basis some students were from families suffering financial hardship, and could be helped.

  1. Application from Kidsfirst Hawea Kindergarten: For $5000 of a total cost of $5000 - $10000 for water run at the kindergarten (a water play area).  The SP Committee felt that kindergarten children could be provided with facilities to play with water for little or no cost.  Directors agreed with the committee’s recommendation that the application be declined, but agreed that the RCW could take on at least some of the work as in-kind help.

Youth and Vocation: Colin Sharp

  1. We understand two MAC students enrolled in the on-line STEM focused Innovative Young Minds course running late April, during  the school holidays, at a cost of approx. $30 for each registration.

  1. President Richard received and forwarded the Outward Bound application form but the committee, thought the expiry date of 29th April was far too short to do anything as we have Easter then school holidays.

Club Membership: Mike Elliot
  1. Directors agreed to a plan to have a session for new(er) members to tell them what Rotary is all about.  Mike agreed to make contact with PDG Tania Lowery, who is in charge of Rotary’s own “Rotary 101” material, which should be very helpful.
  2. Directors noted an email went to all members about picking grapes on 13th and 19th April – a fundraiser.

Social Activities:

  •

General Business:

  1. The marquee – Directors noted that the donors, Raewyn and David Wilson, have acknowledged receipt of our thanks and acceptance of the offer of a marquee. (P.S. the donors have confirmed a donation of 2x 6x12 units)

  1. Grow Wanaka – Directors noted Grow Wanaka hand tools wish-list, also that Mitre 10 currently have a ‘sale’.  Directors agreed to donate Grow Wanaka up to $150 from Club funds to cover the purchase of some tools.

  1. Paul Harris Fellowship Committee recommendation – Directors thanked the committee for developing and sharing a document outlining criteria for awarding Paul Harris Fellowships.  Directors agreed that once finalised, it be made available to members in the Members Only area of the club’s website.

  1. M!NT Charitable Trust – in dialogue with Sec. Alan, Ben Wilson (Trustee) for M!NT has advised that while still desirous of a trailer to store equipment and available for loan as a fundraiser, more pressing are :

1) the running costs of the 2nd van they have been donated, and
2) a modest sized tent/marquee (3m x 3m would be ideal) to provide shelter at activities and events they run – this could be emblazoned with Rotary logos, hopefully, along with M!NT ones.

Directors agreed to invite M!NT to resubmit a funding application focused on the purchase of a 3x3 tent.

  1. Club Officers Rotary Year 2022/23 – PP/PE Mike Elliot informed Directors that the process to find a leadership team for the 2022/23 Rotary Year was almost complete.
