To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
Well what a cracker of a day and NZ Day Holiday to boot.
Congratulations to our newest member Di Cusens whom I inducted last week. I’m sure you’ll all welcome Di into our club.
Covid cancellations have struck again. Rotary District 9980 Conference for 2022 at Cromwell has been cancelled. Bugger.
There will be more on this to follow from DG Nick soon.
Daina and I are on leave for the next couple of weeks and PP Mike has kindly offered to keep things ticking along in my absence. Thanks Mike.
Hope you’re all enjoying this lovely weather after all the rain, take care.

The Wanaka Rotary Duck race
After the untimely interruptions of both Delta and latterly Omicrom, our annual Duck race originally scheduled for November was run in a much abbreviated form. Thanks to John Huddlestone and a small team of Rotarians the ducks finally got their feathers wet early on Saturday morning February 5th.
John's summary of the event is below.
Yes, we have concluded the duck race! There was a random draw of 13 small ducks for the prize winners (the top 3, plus 10 consolation prizes) and similarly a draw for the 'fastest Corporate Duck'. This was all overseen by JP, Ralph Fegan. The 13 small ducks then raced a short distance from the Dinosaur Park Bridge to the finish line at the point where Bullock Creek entered the lake.
George Scott, the only one of us who owned a pair of waders, volunteered to retrieve the ducks as they passed the finish line. The waders were definitely required as the creek was running very high following our recent heavy rain and the morning was relatively cool so no one was keen to strip down to enter the water!
George also had the honour of plucking out his granddaughter, Ruby Smith's duck as the winner, with Doug Lovell's grandson Sam a close 2nd - what were the chances of that!
The winner of the fastest Corporate Duck was Placemakers.
Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to those that helped bring the Rotary Club of Wanaka Duck Race to a fitting conclusion.

Wanaka Rotary Winter Feed Competition
An update from George Scott
The main recipient for the funds raised from the Winter Feed Competition this year is to be the Otago Rescue Helicopter again.
I have been in negotiations with them to have something to raise the funds for.
They recently agreed to put the money we raise this year towards developing the Instrument Flying Route from Dunstan to Wanaka.
This will mean that the helicopter will be able to fly directly to Wanaka in bad weather where as before they could only fly to Dunstan and meet an ambulance from Wanaka there.
This will mean a much better service to the Wanaka area
New member presentation: Nicola Carey

Nikki also talked about her medical school days at Otago; her medical career of Paediatrics then General Practice and passion for immunisations and women’s health.
Latterly, raising her 2 sons in England and how she came to now be in Wanaka.
Lastly Nikki expressed her amazement at meeting her Anatomy Professor, Prof Spiers at the July Rotary Book sale!
An Update from Priya White
Hi Rod and Alan,
I'm writing to give you an end of year update on my dance progress and to say another thank you for the funding that has been so helpful to me.
In October I attended a dance competition in Alexandra along with dancers from Wanaka and around the region and was really pleased to place joint first in my Contemporary 12-13 yrs, third in Intermediate Classical Ballet Championships and joint third in Classical Ballet 12-13 yrs. I was also pleased to take away two special rosettes for Potential in Classical Ballet and my ballet solo.
You may remember at the time of my application I was due to audition for an associate position at the New Zealand School of Dance. Mum and I went up in November to audition with a few others from Wanaka. It was a great experience, however with around 100 people auditioning for around 25 places I was unsuccessful this time, but have been invited to audition next year.
So, I am now looking forward to attending their summer school in January for a week's intensive training which your funding has made possible. I am also exploring options in Christchurch to extend my learning at an alternative school that offers a National Coaching Programme in classical ballet.
I wanted to say thank you for your support and funding, which has enabled me to travel to Wellington for the summer workshop, and also to wish you all a merry Christmas!
Thank you, Priya

Lower Hutt Rotary Club Visit : 21st- 26th February
An update from Mike Elliott
As you will be aware, the Lower Hutt Rotary Club are going to be down in Wanaka from the 21st - 26th February.
As part of their time here we would like to show them some of the area from the Lake, and we would like to establish how many members have boats and would be willing to take part in this exercise. It would only be for a morning or afternoon, and at this stage we are looking at the morning of the 22nd February.
Can those of you who have - or have access to - a boat and would be willing to help, please get back to me as soon as possible.
There are nine or ten people coming down from Hutt, plus some locals too, so not a huge number.
Return email, text, or phone call to me please with responses.
Many thanks - let's show these people what Wanaka is really like!!

Duck Race 2021
- Confirmed the revised date of February 5th 2022, the Saturday of Waitangi Day weekend holiday.
- Finish line will be upstream from mouth - in the vicinity of the Brownston Street food caravans.
Notes from Committee:
- With the country at Covid “Orange” three options were considered - it cannot be held at Dinosaur Park at present, and wherever it is held scanning of certificates will be a requirement.
- The options: 1) deferral, 2) run it as a lottery in New Year, 3) proceed with an alternative shortened race.
- The Duck Race as a lottery - if we cannot proceed for any reason in February - this is the most favoured option – draw by ticket number for both Corporate Ducks and small ducks.
New Year Limited Book Sale
- Plunket has agreed to help and become the beneficiary of the mini-Book Sale, and will supply helpers.
Winter Feed Competition
- George Scott has commenced planning for the Winter Feed Competition and has emailed sponsors.

- Other possible part recipients include the Rural Support Trust, which may be willing to develop into this area.
- Another possible beneficiary, Precious Beginnings, who supports parents of new-borns.

Application from Precious Beginnings: This is a free to attend parenting programme consisting of 10 sessions held over 10 weeks. Its key aim is to provide support for new parents struggling emotionally, being isolated, and not having their own support network. In addition to the structured guidance and lessons delivered by the programme, a key component is the contact with and support of other participants – ‘you are not alone’. They have asked for $5000 out of a total project cost of $25,000 to cover costs of facilitators, adding another programme this coming term since demand is so high, having funds available to help families with unforeseen costs like pelvic physics, counselling etc., also we would like to develop a programme on parenting toddlers "
The Committee recommend that we grant this group $3000.
Mint Charitable Trust: Have requested $9940 plus GST for an equipment trailer. MINT, who have presented to the Club, run a series of programmes for intellectually disabled kids, youth and adults in the Upper Clutha. As the organisation is growing they see this as a storage space for their equipment. They plan to rent out the trailer to other community groups to assist with maintenance and up keep of the trailer and intend to purchase some new play equipment that can be rented out with the trailer to other community groups, and used by the young disabled community.
The Committee recommend a grant of $5000 providing a Rotary Wanaka logo be affixed to the trailer.
