To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
Hello everyone and Happy New Year for 2024. I hope everyone has had relaxing and joyful holidays and you are all looking forward to a Rotary year where we "create hope in the world", especially in the wider Wanaka region.
We are going to have a busy few months to start so please check your calendars & sign up for volunteers required through Club Runner.
Our first event of the year is on Tuesday 16 January from 1730 hours onwards at Mike & Liz Elliot's house. Everyone is welcome, including all family & friends. Please remember to bring your own picnic food, chairs & plates, cutlery, glasses, liquid refreshments & there will be a BBQ available. Any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

At the first club meeting at the Albert Town tavern on 23 January there will be a Paul Harris Fellowship presentation to Rebecca (Bex) Sarginson the founder and Executive Officer of “Food For Love” in Wanaka.
We ask that all members treat this award confidentially until after the presentation on the 23rd of January as Bex is unaware of this Community award from the Rotary Club of Wanaka.

Fundraising Events coming up
2024 Wanaka A@P Show - March 8-9th: Reminder from Mike Elliot
I hope you have received the Volunteer list for the 2024 Wanaka A&P Show by now.
The Rotary Club of Wanaka have been asked to sell tickets and scan tickets at Gates 1 and 3 for the two days of the Show, for which we will be paid $25/person/hour, so a good fundraiser for the Club.
The Sign-up lists have Scanner/Seller 1 or 3 signifying the gates to which you will be volunteering. Instruction will be given as to the duties involved, but all relatively simple.
There are also two slightly different jobs on Gate 3 on both days - helping to get traffic on and off Brownston Street at the end of the day.
I would like to get as many volunteers in place as soon as possible so that the A&P Society can make up any shortfall, so please get your names down soonest!!
Thank you in anticipation for your help in making some more funds for the Club - and hopefully having a bit of fun too!!

January 23rd: Guest Speaker: Bella Sarginson
Bella was the Rotary Aspiring College Tertiary Education Scholarship Winner in 2022
“ My name is Bella Sarginson and I was the very fortunate recipient of the Rotary scholarship for 2022 for which has helped me greatly in the support of starting my journey in tertiary education. I am studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology at the University of Otago and am heading into my second year.”
January 30th: Guest Speaker: Dr Norm Davis
Researcher on the how and why of Duck Itch
Following a 21 year stint as an attack pilot in the US Navy and flying in the Cold War and Vietnam War Dr Davis returned to New Zealand to spend more time with his wife and 5 children while teaching researching and farming in New Zealand
In 1987, Dr and Mrs Davis moved to Waimate where they have farmed and where Dr Davis also taught at the local secondary school.
Keen to get back into research, Dr Davis applied to do a PhD in duck itch.
During visits to his Bremner Bay holiday home in Wanaka, he became interested in duck itch parasites after noticing how miserable children were getting from itching skin welts after swimming in the lake.
Over the years, he published papers and gave presentations on it but despite completing his PhD, was only involved in research on an ''ad hoc basis''.
''This duck itch problem could quite easily be quite a serious problem. There hasn't been enough medical research into the effect on humans,'' he said.
February 20th: Dr Justine Cormack Freelance Violinist.
At this point in her career, Justine Cormack is deriving great artistic fulfilment performing as soloist, chamber musician and guest-concertmaster with a broad variety of her favourite musicians and ensembles.
In October 2021, she launched At the World’s Edge Festival (AWE Festival) with London- based kiwi violinist Benjamin Baker, fulfilling a long-held dream to create a chamber music festival within the stunning landscapes of New Zealand’s Queenstown Lakes.
Performing with leading international chamber musicians from around the globe is now an annual performing highlight for her each October.
In February 2020 they performed their first cycle in her gorgeous Central Otago neighbourhood, performing all ten sonatas over just three days. Three years passed before they were able to repeat the cycle in the Northern Hemisphere as originally planned, delayed due to covid disruptions.
Their second performance of the cycle took place at Butler University, Indianapolis in January 2023.
From 2002 to mid-2017, Justine was a founding member and violinist of NZTrio, performing throughout New Zealand, Australia, Asia, South America, the USA, Europe and Scandinavia.
Justine is hugely proud of the legacy NZTrio built during her15 years with the ensemble.
They commissioned and performed close to 40 works from NZ composers and showcased these compositions within diverse programmes on the world stage.
At their final performance with NZTrio, they were awarded the Lilburn Trust Citation for Outstanding Services to New Zealand Music.
Justine performed recently at the Mt Aspiring U3A monthly meeting.

After a short break, we are back to finalising all of the details for the teddy bear's picnics in Queenstown and Wanaka.

It's also worth noting that the event is not just for the smaller kids, we believe that kids up to 10/11 years will have just as much as of a good time as the younger ones!

Season’s greetings for Christmas and the New Year
Thanks for a wonderful 2023!
As we approach the end of 2023, we would like to express our gratitude for your continued support throughout the year. It's heartening to witness schools eagerly booking for the RYDA workshop in the upcoming year. The support of Rotary clubs throughout the country has been so appreciated by our team.
This year, 53,323 students from 639 schools across New Zealand and Australia graduated from the RYDA programme – our highest participation ever! They engaged in 454 programs which took them from classroom learning to our fun-filled, frontloading workshops and back to the classroom and community to further explore and put their learning into action.
Our workshops saw nearly 12,300 individual sessions facilitated by our dedicated team of over 270 experts.

We have just released our Annual Report and there is some great data around the behaviour change we are creating with RYDA graduates.
89% of students told us they felt more equipped with strategies to reduce risk after the RYDA workshop.
95% of students would likely or very likely to apply RYDA learnings when in a vehicle.
99% of teachers rate rider is worthwhile or very worthwhile for their students.
97% of teachers rate writer content is effective or very effective
We are growing and have some exciting staff changes to announce for 2024.
Naomh Cusin who has been our South Island Programme Coordinator for the past five years has been promoted to a newly created NZ Programme Manager role. Naomh has successfully built a great programme in the South Island with most areas participating in RYDA and doubling student attendance to over 4000. Naomh will be supporting our four PCs nationally and helping them grow their regions.
Replacing Naomh will be Liona Stanicich who you may have already met as she has been a facilitator and Day manager for Naomh for the past few years.
In addition we have a new PC for the Lower North island, Narita Dixon who lives near Levin and will be taking over this crucial area.

One Good Kiwi gives away $100,000 each month to selected charities, asking the public to vote (through digital tokens) for their charity to determine the share they'll receive. In December we have been selected and would really appreciate your votes as every token helps us keep prices down for your school and students.

Every token donated to us gives us real money to use to improve the RYDA programme and help us subsidise schools.
