On Tuesday 5 th August we heard from Stephanie Fieldsend about the establishment of an Abbeyfield House here in Wānaka. Stephanie is looking for some help to phone protentional sponsors for this project. If you can help, please contact Stephanie at fieldsend2024@gmail.com
I am away on Tuesday 19 th August so thank you Geoff for once again filling in. Kelly Budd will be our speaker as a new member of our club. I am sorry I cannot attend and am sure that our members will be there to hear from Kelly.

This fortnight we have held our committee meetings and remember that it is the committees that unite to do good in our community. Everyone’s contribution to planning events, fundraising projects, administration and social events all matter for the successful operation of our club.
The Directors will be meeting this Sunday night to discuss committee reports and to set our rotary fees for the
next 12 months.
It is great to see that the Rotary Youth Exchange Progamme has finally been approved and accredited by the
Rotary International RYE team. This means our District can now focus on planning a RYE programme.
However, because our District was required to submit a new RYE application to Rotary International, we now
need to form a RYE committee to enable us to be fully prepared to facilitate the programme for Outbound and
Inbound students. If you are interested in being involved in the District RYE Committee, please contact Dave
McKissock (021 670 121 or email: dave.rotary9999@gmail.com). Once a committee is formed the district will be
able to host inbound students hopefully in January 2026.
The Directory for the 2025 2026 is nearing its final review and will be printed for distribution in the coming weeks.

On Wednesday 20 th August the Wānaka Community Resilience Group will be holding a meeting at the Rugby
Club Rooms at 7pm to discuss who may be able to help in the event of an emergency in our region. Everyone is
welcome.

Tuesday 5th August 2025: Stephanie Fieldsend-Abbeyfield trust Wanaka
Stephanie outlined the Trusts vision of building a housing complex in Wanaka which would accommodate some 19 or so single pensioners who can ill afford to live in the region.
This would enable all inhabitants to live solely on their government pension with no personal outgoing costs of rates. Insurance, grounds and or maintenance. The housing complex would be named Abbeyfield House.
The house will be built by the Community, for the Community. The Trust’s aim is to dispel the myths, change perception, and foster understanding that it is our current diversity that gives Wanaka its heart.
Funding is already underway to raise three million dollars to build the complex, as the Trust seeks to find a suitable site for the house within the boundaries of the CBD.
Stephanie is the head of fundraising and is confident the build will go ahead having already, on paper, had commitment of around one million. The vision is commendable, but not for the faint hearted.

Foundation Committee Movie Night
The Foundation Committee is pleased to announce that this year's movie night will be on Tuesday 7th October.
Guests will be welcome to arrive at Paradiso Theatre from 6 pm onwards with the movie starting at 7 pm.

The movie is The Roses starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. We have booked out Cinema 1 and there are only 78 seats.

Further to my announcement at last Tuesdays Rotary meeting. Wānaka Community Resilience Group (previously known as Wānaka Community Response Group) is looking to convene a session with a number of relevant local groups who would be useful support to our community in the case of an emergency (Earthquake, flood, storms, wildfires, landslides etc.)
The purpose is to meet to talk about the WCRG role and our group role in the community, our personnel, skills, resources and what WCRG can do all do in peace time and in an emergency.
Emergency Management Otago will also be present at the table to support the conversation.
The meeting will be at the Rugby Club Rooms on the 20th August at 7pm and they are anticipating it will go for an hour. They are hoping to have a mix of groups that may be able to assist our community in some way should there be an emergency.
There is no need to register, simply just turn up. If you have any specific agenda points that you would like to raise, please let me know so I can ensure WCRG facilitate them into the session. It would be great to see our Rotary Group well represented on the evening.

Greetings from D9815, Melbourne and Gippsland Areas. My local club is Maroondah, about 30km NE of Melbourne. Valda, I am an aviation nut, having attended the Royal International Tatoo (RIAT) in the UK, and a regular attendee to Avalon International Airshow (near Geelong) and Warbirds Downunder at Temora (NSW). I have always coveted attending Warbirds over Wanaka and have started looking forward to my options for 2026 and attending WOW over the Easter Weekend. I notice from the club website that the club assists in the running of the event, although there is no indication of exactly what you do. If i was to indicate that I would be available to assist over the weekend, would that be something your club would entertain? As I did when I went to RIAT in 2016, i was hosted by Rotarians in the near area and wonder if amongst your members there would be a Rotarian willing to host me for 3-4 day? I will have my own means of transport over the stay period. If home hosting isn't available, do you have connections in the accomodation industry where you might suggest i look for somewhere to stay?
