Presidents Report  14th August 2023

The meeting this week will be different for a number of reasons . The venue is the Pembroke Lounge (Upper Clutha Rugby Club rooms ) and the meal will be pizzas . This has been necessitated by Columbus advising us on Friday that , due to staffing issues , they could not accomodate us on any level . A far from satisfactory situation  and thanks to Alan and Deans for stepping up to the plate .
I am also away in Blenheim this week so Alan will be running the meeting .

Very successful committee meetings were held last week with a lot of meaty issues discussed . Wonderful programme has been set up by the Activities Committee and Admin Committee who amongst other things is working on improvements to our apology / attendance , sound system issues ; now as a result of the above scenario venue raises its head !!

We have an interesting speaker this week - Dr Helen Paterson talking about her work in bringing women’s health issues to rural communities .

With a variety of issues I must say that my first few weeks as your President have not been dull.
Warm regards
President John

Jose Cranfield is the Education lead from Wai Wanaka Charity

As a visitor to Wānaka for 30 years and resident for the last 8, looking after our precious natural resources is important to Jose Cranfield. After a short stint studying classical music and a decade in the manufacturing industry, Jose joined WAI Wānaka to have the opportunity to drive projects that make a difference in our community. Jose’s passion is connecting community and in particular young people to learning in practical, real word situations and she sees her work as an opportunity to bring science, tech, sustainability and maths out of the classroom.
Jose will be speaking about a number of local initiatives WAI Wānaka are currently involved in and how you as a community member can get involved.

Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust: New Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) route to Wanaka
The Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust is excited to announce that a new IFR route will be operational into Wanaka this week, thanks to funding from the Rotary Club of Wanaka.
The Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Service operates across the largest and arguably the most challenging geographic landscape in New Zealand, providing a critical medical response to people in often desperate situations right across the lower South Island. In the past, missions could only be completed where pilots had the clear visibility for flying but, with the development of instrument flight rules (IFR) routes, missions can now be flown where poor visibility would otherwise preclude a response. From the first routes into Dunstan, Invercargill, and Dunedin, the network has been expanded over the past five years to cover all the main valleys in the region.
Developing these precision routes to Queenstown and Wanaka were much more of a challenge but, with funding from the Rotary Club of Wanaka, a route to the Wanaka Medical Centre will become operational this week. “The is a really significant development that will save lives in the Wanaka area” said Graeme Gale, Managing Director of Helicopters Otago Ltd that operates the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Service. “I didn’t think it was going to be possible to get routes through those valleys, given the narrow terrain, but it’s brilliant we’ve achieved that. When visibility is poor and the freezing level drops, the only way through is on an IFR route. At times we are flying 20 – 30% of missions on IFR, all missions that would otherwise be impossible”. Overall, this is a very significant piece of infrastructure for the lower South Island enabling the critical rescue helicopter service to reach patients nearly all the time. There are still times where very low freezing levels or severe weather conditions make flying impossible, but we are far less restricted that before.
Funding was provided from the Rotary Club of Wanaka from funding raised at its Upper Clutha Winter Cropping Competition in 2022. The Competition’s organiser, George Scott said “we knew each leg of these IFR routes cost tens of thousands to develop so the community really pulled together to make this happen”.
Martin Dippie, Chairman of the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust said “the disperse communities across Otago and Southland are reliant on the rescue helicopter service reaching them when severe medical or accident emergencies occur and we are proud to support developments that enable those missions”.

The Noticeboard
A Note from Pip O'Regan
I hope all is well with you.
Recently Food for Love has had a surge in nominations (plus with so many drivers away at the moment) resulting in us providing 4 drivers each week.
Would you be able to put it out to your members to see if there are more people who are willing to give an hour of their time once a month to deliver the Thursday meals.
Pick up is between 3 - 3.15pm at the rugby clubrooms with deliveries split into areas (covering from Hawea to Queensbury) and usually taking no more than an hour.
I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

A Note on the Family Support Programme

I believe your organisation is aware of the Community Networks/LINK Family Support Programme, a volunteer-based service supporting local families in the Upper Clutha. The first round of the service has gone really well and we are now looking for more volunteers to help our young families with companionship and household tasks. The commitment is two hours a week and we match volunteers with a family for a minimum of six weeks, so that a trusting and mutually beneficial relationship can be established.

We would be very grateful if you would please share the attached flyer, or the linked job description, within your networks and ask anyone interested to please get in touch with me.

Thanks so much,

Joanna
