Presidents  Report  3rd March 2025
March already!  Longer nights and in one month the clocks will go back an hour.  And there are all of those tomatoes to find a use for.  Which leads me to note our 5.45pm visit to Grow Wanaka's garden near The Outlet on Tuesday night (tomorrow) - followed by notices etc before a meal at The Albie (see Ron's message sent last Saturday for more details).
 
You will have seen 'sign-up' requests for several fundraising activities coming up - next week it's the A&P Show.  Mid-April (Easter) it is Wheels at Wanaka and mid-May it's the awards and auction night for the Wanaka A&P Winter Crop Competition.  Followed by the sorting work leading to the Annual Rotary Book Sale in the July school holidays.  Not everyone can make it to our weekly meetings, but I'm hoping most can help, and enjoy the fellowship, at one or more of these activities.
 
And a moment on Apologies: we've seen a 'mixed' performance as the year got underway.  Obviously plans can change at short notice and the courtesy of a late apology is appreciated, but maintaining a good relationship with The Albie does require us to give them accurate meal numbers - and your diligence is the key to achieving accurate numbers.  Last week, apart from a couple of late apologies we had 4 silent (no show) members - we can and we must do better.
 
And on the subject of meals - The Albie have given notice of a price increase for their club meal.  Starting on March 18th,  the price of the meal will be $29.00.  Special order meals will continue to be priced according to The Albie's standard menu.
 
Hopefully I'll see most of you at Grow Wanaka tomorrow evening.

Coming up - Club Night Activities
 
March 18th - Liona Stanicich
My name is Liona Stanicich and I am the RYDA Program Coordinator for the South Island.  RYDA stands for Rotary Youth Driver Awareness and I will be running 34 RYDA workshops through the South Island in Term 1 and Term 2.
February 18th - Ian Brown U.C.R.T. Users
Ian gave Rotarians a potted history of what was initially the Roys Peak Radio Users group (formed in 1977 with Chair Dr Dennis Pezaro) with the move to VHF and UHF.  He outlined the many challenges including almost monthly bills due to lightening strikes, clashes with QLDC and the Police over rights and ownership once the Lions handed over the plant.
Ian then outlined the recent expenditure on Roys Peak of the solar/battery power system (pictured below) together with the new system on Mt Maude which extends coverage across the whole Upper Clutha region. 
Thank you Ian for an excellent history of this vital service and Rotary's assistance. And Ian did emphasize they are always after new members. 
     
 
February 25th  Lewis Briscall 
Lewis is a competitive Cross Country Skier and is a recent overseas Rotary funding recipient. Lewis took us through his recent training and competitions he has participated in - which are many! He is still a young man and is set to join the other well know winter games athletes which spring from the Wanaka-Hawea region. We shall look forward to hearing Lewis's name mentioned many times in the future.

From Sally Angus- update on George and Betty Russell
Members will be concerned to know that Honorary member George Russell and his wife Betty will be going to Dunedin this weekend.  George is going into care while his wife Betty has surgery on Monday.  She will join him in the care facility after leaving hospital.  At this stage they are unsure if they will be returning to Wanaka. Malcolm Baker visited them at their Wanaka home on Feb 27 and reports they were in good spirits.

I attended the Kitzbuhel Rotary Club last night. The speaker was about student exchanges 
I was seated next to a physiotherapist and as I left I said I hoped I didn’t need to use her services 
It is a club of 60 members with 12 females 
They made to feel very welcome

Winter Crop Competition – Friday 16 May 2025

In early December a sub-committee was formed to meet with The Upper Clutha A&P Society (A&P) and to make recommendations. Members of the sub-committee are Deans Hudson, John Milburn, Rod Pemberton, Geoff McLeay, Eion Rutherford, Mike Elliot, Elaine Kelly and Geoff Tomkins.
 
It has been since been agreed that Rotary will remain as the owners and organizers of the competition but will grant The Upper Clutha A&P Society naming rights for a term of 1 year for the payment of $5,000. The period of the agreement will end on 30 November 2025.
 
Both parties have a collaborative approach which reflects the Upper Clutha rural community and we see this a positive move in providing our farmers with an event which will engage the farming community. In accepting the offer, A&P have kindly offered to help with the promotion of the competition and provide their support with an end goal of raising funds for the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust and the local Fire Brigades of Tarras, Luggate and Hawea, this years recommended beneficiaries.
 
The event will be held at Upper Clutha Rugby Football Club on Friday 16 May.

venue and most importantly who we are supporting.
