Special Announcement – On your behalf, I would like to congratulate Elaine who was recently invited to join our District Grants Committee. Elaine has accepted the role, and we wish her every success. Well done, Elaine!
Last week, Elaine emailed letters to Clubs and all Zone 8 Districts seeking support for our Global Grant SWaSH project in Tanzania. The initial response has been very encouraging, with an Otago club immediately committing support, followed by a District in Australia, which has generously committed USD 3,000. Please also read the item further down the bulletin prepared by Helen Tait and Helen's email sent out via ClubRunner today.
I have only recently learned that August is Rotary’s Membership and New Club Development Month.
In keeping with Rotary International’s focus, I would like to recognise the enormous contribution each of you makes, and continues to make, as we move forward. We are very fortunate to have a club full of such devoted members.
The five Rotary Clubs in our area held our new collaborative Zoom meeting last Wednesday. This is an informal catch-up and a great opportunity to exchange current plans and share ideas. It also provided an opportunity to talk about our Global Grant. It worked well, and we have scheduled another Zoom meeting for October.
A couple of members have asked what they should focus on this year, so below are the three principles I announced at our Changeover Dinner. I will expand on these in greater detail in Tuesday’s slide show:
Make a Bigger Impact in Our Community – deepen our community impact.
Keep Our Club Fun and Welcoming.
Continue to Spread the Word About Rotary – expand our reach and relevance.
Do you have a bright idea, a burning question, or a bold proposal? Big or small, your input can help shape the future of our club, so please don’t hold back. Let a director know what you think. If there is sufficient interest, we can also establish a confidential form for members to share their ideas.

Daz Coppins
General Manager, Festival of Colour
Originally from the Bay of Plenty, Daz Coppins has been calling Wānaka home since 2022. He is a highly experienced live events and production leader with over 20 years delivering concerts, festivals, and large-scale entertainment projects across New Zealand, Canada and Australia.
Daz brings a deep background in touring, operations and technical production having recently worked for leading global promoter Live Nation APAC, where he managed production and logistics for major tours across New Zealand and Australia. His career also spans senior roles across large-scale event delivery, promoter operations and business leadership, including General Manager of 365 Productions Australia and Production Manager with NW Group where
he led production installs for Rising Festival, Melbourne Music Week and many other Australian festivals and tours.
Alongside his work in live events, Daz has led global digital education initiatives as Product Manager and Head of Coaching at Guitar Mastery Method, developing and scaling international music education programmes and communities.
A professional musician in his own right, Daz is currently involved in two active projects, including his rock band EAST YORK, and he also plays drums for local Wānaka act - FIONA & THE GLOW. He spent seven years based in Canada, touring internationally as a full-time session musician, performing with major label artists and at leading festivals across North America including New Orleans Jazz Festival and The Warped Tour.
Now stepping into the role of General Manager for the Wānaka Festival of Colour, Daz is focused on strengthening the festival’s connection to community while continuing to grow its national and international profile.
“I’m really excited to step in as General Manager at Festival of Colour and be part of a festival which has such a strong connection to the community,” says Daz. “The Festival of Colour and Aspiring Conversations have built an incredible reputation over the years. My intention is to support and honour this foundation while helping create space for the festivals to continue to grow.”
“Wānaka is such a special place to live, with many unique qualities and there is real potential to deepen the connection between the festival and the community. I’m looking forward to working closely with the Trust, local Iwi, partners, and artists to build a festival all Wānaka locals can truly get behind and be super proud of.”

August 4th : Davida Mead: Some of Davida's amazing adventures
Davida Mead had an astonishing tale to tell when she spoke to the club recently.
She covered her youth at Tarras and her teacher training. More spectacular was her time as a pilot, of both fixed wing and helicopter. She and her husband Guy used these skills after they purchased the high country station, Dingleburn Station, now managed by their daughters.
She spent time at Antartica, flew for Mt Cook Air, sailed to the Antipodes and Sub-Antartic Islands, climbed Mitre Peak and survived time on Mt Aspiring.
It was a very entertaining presentation.

Rotary Club of Wanaka and Rotary Club of Arusha.
School Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (SWaSH) project in government primary schools in the Babati
District, Manyara Region, Tanzania.
Those present will remember the excellent presentation we had in January from Cass Treadwell on the work with which she has been involved, building school facilities in Tanzania. This led to a Directors’ decision to further the work by applying for a Rotary Global Grant.
Elaine Kelly, as Foundation Director, has worked with the Arusha Club in Tanzania to prepare a grant application. We are now at the stage of seeking support and donations from Rotary clubs throughout New Zealand and Australia to achieve the sum required for approval and matching through Rotary International.
A letter which includes a link to a video, has been sent to club Presidents and District Governors seeking their support. We all know that personal contact is usually the best way to get people on board, so we request you to contact any Rotarians you know in other clubs throughout NZ and Australia, send them the links to the letter and the project description, and ask them to personally support it in their club. You can get the name of the President of any club where you have a contact
from Elaine.
A number of our members said at the time of Cass’s presentation that you would like to contribute. Now is the time to let Elaine or a Foundation Committee member know what personal contribution you would like to add to the Wanaka Club grant.
The funds will not be called on until the grant is approved.
