To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.

Upcoming Speaker profiles June 20th Presentation: Ron Horner - The current Artificial Intelligence scene.
In the time allowed after the Special AGM, I will present a quick overview of Large language Models ( like ChatGPT) and the explosion of available A.I Tools in 2023. This will include image and video tools and the massive investment in hardware to support these apps. I will also touch on the threats of deep fakes and scams that will cause future confusion, and the future of sentience and singularity with a hat tip to "Arnold".

Our Speaker for the 4th July is Wanaka man Andy Coughey who is the Managing Director of Ministry of Wool Ltd
Andy is constantly travelling the world looking for new markets for our New Zealand Merino Wool Did you know that one American company purchases Hundreds of tons of New Zealand Merino Wool to cover Tennis Balls!!!!
Another example is The Armadillo Merino launched in 2011 as a brand of Merino wool clothing which was established to wear next to skin to reduce injuries and save the lives of professional operators working in extreme conditions and in high risk occupations such as in the Military, Police, Fire Service,Ambulance and Search and rescue
The garments are sold directly to end-users and into institutional organisations that want to ensure the safety and comfort of their employees by equipping them in the most advanced base-layer clothing available in the world today.

Matt Woods, CEO Destination Queenstown and Tim Barke, CEO Lake Wanaka Tourism, will take you through the region’s Destination Management plan created in collaboration with QLDC. They will review how and why it was undertaken and the research which informed the creation of this plan for our region’s sustainable future. They will review the key projects and answer any questions you may have.
Tuesday 6th June presentation: Sarah Holmes - Penny's Homecare
Penny's Homecare was started by Penny Fisher, a nurse who saw a need to take people out of long-term care and support them to continue as long as they could in their homes.
Sarah was a Nursery school teacher and artist. She and her husband took over the business and managed 32 staff
They contacted Rotary wanting to raise funds for a community end of life flotation chair. Now they have 2!
Sarah explained, "We only visit if we can give you something. The first thing we do is greet people. Everyone needs a different greeting, so we listen to know what they need. "
Some key phrases she lives and runs her business by
"Genuine care is giving what people need to receive, not what we need to give."
Be genuinely interested
She shared the 3 things in common game with us. One person says what they enjoy until the other person has found 3 things from their list that they also enjoy.
Caring is a team sport
Age care is not thriving in Wanaka and she wants to start a Gross national care think tank in Wanaka, instead of gross national Happiness, such as Bhutan.

HAWEA FLATS PRIMARY CLASSROOM BLOCK OPENING
Sitting outside on classroom steps yesterday, the Hawea community celebrated the opening of a block of 8 new classrooms at Hawea Flats Primary School to accommodate its rapidly growing role, now numbering over 200. The opening ceremony was ably lead by a group of year 6 pupils and started with a fascinating account of the history of the school.
It opened 141y ago in 1882 to educate the local farming community. The last time pupil numbers were large was in the 1950s when the construction of the control dam on the lake brought an influx of young families to the area.
Headmistress, Tania Pringle thanked the local community for their support and fundraising and South Base , the builders for their hard work which brought the building project to completion.

A Note on the Family Support Programme
I believe your organisation is aware of the Community Networks/LINK Family Support Programme, a volunteer-based service supporting local families in the Upper Clutha. The first round of the service has gone really well and we are now looking for more volunteers to help our young families with companionship and household tasks. The commitment is two hours a week and we match volunteers with a family for a minimum of six weeks, so that a trusting and mutually beneficial relationship can be established.
