To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
Well, big night last night as 70+ members, partners and friends of the club celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Wanaka being chartered, on September 22nd, 1984. Early in the evening I learnt that Pam and Kevin Henderson, visiting from the Rotary Club of Balclutha, were present that night in Wanaka's old town hall. And later in the night we learnt they were also present when our club celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Grace was said by PP Catherine Little (2002-03) that night 40 years ago, and Catherine did the honours again last night. Among other Honorary Members, PP George Russell (2001-02) and wife Betty were in the crowd; George being the longest serving Rotary Club of Wanaka member in attendance. Noelene Pullar, first, by a week, female member inducted and first female president (1999-2000), spoke about the club and its activities, including high jinks at conferences 25 years ago. We also heard from District Governor Dave McKissock and yours truly. Dave presented a Certificate of Appreciation from District 9999. While several travelled within our Central Otago region, it was great to see PP Margaret West (2016 - 17) and husband John Talboys having a break from their Northland home, and PP Deb Budden (2019-20) escaping for a while from the land of red and black.
But the other big news of the night was the awarding of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Duncan Boswell. This award was warmly applauded by all - a very well-deserved recognition for many years of support and work within the club, congratulations Duncan. Duncan later read a speech written by Bruce Barnett, the earliest, still living past president. Bruce was the club's second president, (1985-86) following chartering president Bruce King.
I thanked the organisers of the event on the night but wish to again note the huge role the Elliots, Mike and Liz, played in getting this celebration started and completed. Thanks also to Ron Horner for the many, many hours of work converting old video and photos into formats that could be displayed during the night (and are now accessible for other purposes), and Tony O'Regan whose timekeeping and humour kept us on track as the evening unfolded.
Key messages and reminisces were largely about the fun that has been had over the years, and that money had been both raised and spent in the process - all to the benefit of the community in both tangible (BBQ's, cycle tracks, parks/playgrounds) and intangible ways (scholarships, personal development and experiential learning opportunities). I hope I didn't dampen the tone too much by urging those present to think about the need, and the ways, for us to remain relevant to our community, and the importance of recruiting 'locals' to help us achieve that evolution.
Tomorrow night we will hear from Dean Dunning and Hannah Einam from Wanaka Solar, then for the next 6 weeks, we have a programme of events and visits (bowls, Coastguard, movies, horse races, Club Committee nights) that will keep us away from The Albie until mid-November. September 24th. Dean Dunning and Hannah Einam: Wanaka Solar.
Dean is incredibly passionate about the solar industry and making a difference to the planet. His deep care for the environment and commitment to sustainability took a new direction when he moved to Wanaka. Noticing the abundance of sunshine and the lack of solar panels on roofs, Dean saw an opportunity to merge his passion for renewable energy with his qualifications. This led to the founding of Wanaka Solar. Driven by a desire to make a positive impact, Dean is dedicated to ensuring people have a great experience with solar. He focuses on providing systems that meet customers' needs and are built to last, making a lasting difference in the community.

Past Club Night Activities
September 17th. Don Grant - Chairperson of Wanaka Airport (Note this is at the Albie not a vocational visit).
The talk on 17 September by Don Grant, chair of Wanaka Airport Users Group and Volunteer Manager for Warbirds over Wanaka was riveting for those of us who have an interest in flying machines of any sort.
His love of Beechcraft Staggerwing C17 aircraft from the 1930s led him to discover that one had been ordered by Auckland Aero Club back in 1936 and shipped alone with on destined for Australia.
The New Zealand specimen eventually wound up in Australia and survived three minor crashes only to wind up in somebodies basement in Sydney. Don Bought the machine and shipped it here. As if that didn’t involve enough research to track down, Don had to find engine components (he found 7 brand new cylinder heads dated 1944) and the wherewithal to restore almost every item on the aircraft using local craftsmen wherever possible. This labour of love is still ongoing and the aircraft is rather amazingly the 5th Staggerwing in New Zealand, some of which are D17 models. Sadly, we won’t be seeing it at the next Warbirds. It will take longer than that.
As a sidenote, Beechcraft (started by Mr. & Mrs Beech in 1932) kept making the Staggerwing through the war and eventually replaced it in 1947 with the Beech Bonanza. This aircraft is still in production to this date, the longest production run of any aircraft. Beechcraft itself has had many owners since.

Movie night will be held on Tuesday night 15th October.
The movie is Thelma which is currently showing.
Rotten Tomatoes rates the movie 98% - a charming movie, funny script, genuine emotional depth with outstanding performances.
Venue - Paradiso - start time 7 pm - arrive with guests after 6pm for a social occasion before the movie. Drinks at your cost.
Cost is $25 per ticket - Raffle $5 for 2 draws.

Annual Wanaka and Aspiring Rotary Combined Tititea Lodge Clean up Weekend
When: 12-13 October
What: Getting the lodge all ready for the summer school camps from Mount Aspiring College and Dunstan High (and others). General maintenance, gardening, simple repairs, cutting and splitting firewood etc.
Typically it costs around $35 per person for food for the weekend. There is always an amazing evening meal on the Saturday evening. Partners, kids also welcome.
We normally leave Wanaka around 8am, on the Saturday and carpool and normally leave the lodge just after lunch on Sunday. There is an option to just come for the for the Saturday if you can’t stay the night.
Bring warm clothes, sleeping bag, pillow case, chainsaw (if you have one), and something to drink in the evening.
Rotary have been involved with the Lodge for many years and is great to keep this continuing. Alexandra and Milton Rotary also have a weekend there. Alexandra do the close up just before Winter and Milton run guided tramping trips.

Gibbston Valley Summer Concert - Saturday, 18th January 2025
The Rotary Club of Wanaka has once again agreed to assist with ticket scanning at the Gibbston Valley Concert on Saturday, 18 January 2025. Due to operational changes by the organisers, for this concert we will only work on one of the main entrance gates (Cromwell gate). As in previous years, some of us may also be asked to assist in some other areas eg. monitoring of drink water tanks.
An opportunity to hear great live music and enjoy a memorable festival experience with friends and family! All AFTER a stint helping to raise funds for our local Rotary Club, with all funds going to local community groups.
Most of you know the drill, having helped previously. One major change however is a requirement by everyone on ticketing to attend an earlier than normal health and safety/scanning briefing at 7.15am on the morning of the concert.
As in previous years, we will be supplied with scanners to scan people's tickets as they enter, so the task is a relatively simple one. We just need to ensure that we have enough people on hand on the day! Security staff will be in attendance checking bags etc. Event management will be on hand to troubleshoot.
Everyone who volunteers, will be provided with a free pass to the concert (value $177).
In addition to the above, the Rotary Club of Wanaka has been given the opportunity to collect donations from the Queenstown car park. We can expect a reasonably good collection here for just a few hours of effort.
We are usually able to start releasing people from the gate by 1pm, but our contract requirement is to be there until 3pm. The carpark collection is from 8.30am to whenever, but usually, it is wound up by 1.00pm.
People will be able to have short breaks during their shifts, and you can bring in outside food and non-alcoholic drinks. No outside alcohol is permitted.
As noted previously, everyone helping on the day with ticketing at the Cromwell Entrance Gate will be required to attend an on-site briefing at 7.15am, with the gate manned from 8.15 - 8.30am.

This will be the 14th year of this concert series and it is expected to be a great concert for people to enjoy and relax. It also provides the Rotary Club of Wanaka with a good fundraising opportunity.
