To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
My six months as the President of the Wanaka Rotary Club will finish at the changeover dinner on Saturday 29 June at the Stoaker Room. Please remember to book yourself a place for this special event to welcome Alan as our new president for the 2024 - 2025 Rotary year.
It has been a privilege to represent our club as president over the last six months & I started my first evening by awarding a Paul Harris
Fellowship (PHF) to Bex Sarginson, Food for Love. I wonder if Paul Harris had any idea what he started back in 1905 & the fact that
Rotary is now one of the largest service organisations in the world.
I am only one member of the executive team, who have provided guidance, leadership, and fellowship for all our club members during the last 12 months. I appreciate everything that has been achieved to create hope in the world, especially our little part here in Wanaka.
The support from the directors & all members has been outstanding for both John (Captain) and myself & for that we are grateful. There are
several members who sit outside the executive, who without their contribution Wanaka Rotary would not be the success that it is & to
those people I thank you too.
Our membership continues to go from strength to strength with Merrin Dougherty (Cromwell) & Graeme Brown (Waipapa) transferring into our
club & Helen Tait, Kelley Budd & Vanessa Hills joining the Rotary family all in the last six months.
We have had an amazing six months with Gibbston Valley, February, Agricultural & Pastoral Show & Warbirds over Wanaka, March, Rotary
Conference Christchurch, April, guess who came to dinner & the Winter Crop competition, May plus there was bike rides, meetings, vocation
activities & lots of interesting and thought-provoking speakers.
The directors will be meeting on Monday 17 June and due to a family matter, I am not able to attend, thank you Alan for chairing this
meeting.
Next Tuesday 18 June we will be hearing from our club member Helen Tait regarding the Public Consultation Group formed in 2002, to
establish a ten-year plan for Wanaka & what has happened & where they are up to.
And finally, there will be no Rotary Meeting on Tuesday 25 June due to the Change over on Saturday 29 June.

June 4th - Wanaka. 2020 Hindsight. How did we get here, and where are we heading?
Speakers are as follows Helen Tait. Our new Wanaka Rotary member, had her main career in local government management.
In 2002 she was the Project Manager for major QLDC planning efforts – Tomorrow’s Queenstown and Wanaka 2020, at a time when 2020 seemed way in the future! https://www.qldc.govt.nz/media/viaai1ni/wanaka_2020_2002.pdf
She hopes that Rotarians will be keen to join her in following up on what happened to the plans and dreams set out in Wanaka 2020. Alyson Hutton, QLDC Manager of Planning Policy, and Anita Vanstone, Strategic Growth Manager will give us an update and explain how to have your say in future plans.
Alyson Hutton is the manager of Planning Policy at QLDC, primarily responsible for the District Plan, its regular review, giving effect to national policy direction and giving statutory weight through zoning to the Spatial Plan.
She has lived in the Wakatipu Basin since 2002 and while was not directly involved in Wanaka 2020, she worked on other community plans at that time, working at CivicCorp, then Council until 2014 when she spent time as a self-employed planning consultant on a wide range of development projects nationwide. However, her heart is in local government and policy development, and in 2021 she rejoined QLDC as the Manager of Planning Policy.
Anita Vanstone is QLDC’s Strategic Growth Manager with over 20 years of experience working for local councils, private practice and for a residential development company in New Zealand and the UK. She manages the QLDC Strategic Growth team that is responsible for the creation and implementation of the Spatial Plan, Structure Planning growth planning and all non-resource management housing matters. A key aspect of her role is forging better relationships and partnerships internally and with government, the regional council, iwi, developers and the community.
Recent Speaker - June 4th -Dawn Bosley - Special Need Coordinator Mt Aspiring College - June 4th
"I have been a teacher at Mount Aspiring College for many years. I started here primarily teaching in Year 7 with an overview of the students with special needs. As the years have progressed and Mt Aspiring's roll has increased, my role has completely reversed. I now teach only four hours a week in the mainstream and the rest of my week is spent supporting students with special needs and the team who work with them. I love my job and feel privileged to do the work I do."
Dawn gave an inspiring talk of her relationships with her students and how they all required tailored approaches and their unique responses.

The attached picture came from Gavin and Sheila Scott who came to one of our meetings in Wanaka last year, and we went and saw them in Scotland later in the year. I gave Gavin a Wanaka Rotary hat - hence the message from them.

Recently spotted and paparazzied getting curried up and prepared to belt out some Elton John and Billy Joel hits at the Lake Wanaka Centre Friday last. Luckily Dr Peter never had his tennis racquet on hand. (You need to ask him).

Each Rotary Year we as members donate $20 to the eradication of Polio around the world.
The following text of an email was received from Rotary Foundation Trustee John Germ from UNICEF thanking Rotarians in our District.
“ As we reflect on 2023 successes, you are at the top of our list of people to be grateful for. Thanks to you and Rotarians around the world for standing with UNICEF once again this year in our mission to relentlessly pursue a more equitable world for every child. With your help, UNICEF was able to achieve the following”:
· Deliver more than 1 billion doses of oral polio vaccines.
· Provide 356.3 million children under 5 – more than ever before – with programmes to prevent malnutrition in all its forms.
· Vaccinate 77.9 million children against measles, over 27 million in countries affected by humanitarian crises.
· Help 39 million people access WASH services in humanitarian emergencies.
· Support 25.2 million children, adolescents, and caregivers access community[1]based mental health and psychosocial support.
Supporting children’s health yields lifelong dividends. Thank you for being there for every child.
