To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
As I sit to type this message it is still dark outside & there is snow on the hills, so I have put the fire on much to my husband's condemnation. Don't forget to see Mike about firewood for the winter if you need some. Wanaka Rotary have also donated a trailer load of firewood to be raffled by Food for Love as part of their fund-raising drive.
The establishment of the Central Lakes Rotaract club happened on Thursday 14 March and Wanaka Rotary together with Cromwell, Alexandra and Queenstown are the sponsoring clubs. It was great to see the future of Rotary through the eyes of these motivated young people who share a passion for both community service and friendship. Last week Glen Thurston shared his amazing story and challenges resulting in the establishment of Turn the Corner. Please remember that within our club there is always someone available to help and the first step and often hardest step is to ask.
Tomorrow night we will welcome two new members to our Wanaka Rotary club and two existing Rotarians from Cromwell and Keri Keri. We look forward to assisting you all on your Rotary journey with the Wanaka Rotary Club.
Easter bunny will be arriving this weekend together with all the visitors for Warbirds over Wanaka. All the best to those volunteering at Warbirds. Remember it can be cold in the mornings so lots of layers as the days do warm up.

Warbirds over Wanaka: Site Map
Club Night- Tuesday 19th March - Glenn Thurston
Glenn Thurston kindly came to Wānaka Rotary club to give us an overview of his road to setting up Turn The Corner, aimed at raising awareness around the issues of depression and suicide.
With a background in the construction industry, Glenn was open about his own struggles and the lack of willingness to talk openly within his industry and society in general. This inspired him to climb Corner Peak 53 times on consecutive days and invite any and all to join him to start a conversation and acknowledge the 53 suicides annually in construction.

Glen Thurston, Turn the Corner gave a very informative talk on Tuesday 19 March. Glen spoke about his achievements conquering Corner Peak on 53 consecutive days to raise awareness for mental health particularly in the construction industry. On average 53 construction industry workers commit suicide each year. Glen spoke of his own experiences with mental health and the lengths he went to to overcome these.

Wanaka Rotary Bike Riders Lake Dunstan and Rail Trail excursions
The Dunstan bike ride recently completed by Rotary members was blessed with perfect weather and fun was had by all. A big thank you to organizer Peter Borrie – we will keep you on. Special thanks to M.J. and Ken Goldfinch for providing the vital transport returns. It would have been impossible to arrange otherwise. And thanks also to Ian and Lois for the “Haynes Train” transport of bikes and bringing their engaging friends Alan and Debbie.
Day one was the challenge with the zigzag up the Cairnmiur from the coffee boat. Julian, Anne and Chris on “acoustic” bikes made it look easy. Day two from Oturehua to Omakau was a peach with gentle grades afforded by the old railway bed. The coffee at Gilchrists was interesting. All mechanical issues were overcome, and physical problems were minor. AND- Derek scored with the Sundowner decision.
